The dance of the fireflies

MARE is proud to have helped organize the activity “The dance of the fireflies” presented by Martin Larochelle, technician in bio ecology and member of MARE. The dance of the fireflies is supported by the Small Green Wood Protection Committee and by Crivert.

This presentation of the life cycle of fireflies and their essential ecological role took place at Petit Bois Vert, very close to Parc de la Barrière, in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, 2 natural environments for which citizens have successfully mobilized in recent months to ensure their protection. There is also a very impressive quantity of fireflies of several species., which demonstrates the importance of this urban ecosystem.

In 2021, 4 evenings “The dance of the fireflies”, bringing together 4 at 10 participant.e.s, were presented. It was a great success ! We could already announce that this activity will be back in 2022 in version 2.0 with the addition of a musical component. This activity could also be offered for a longer period since Martin was able to observe that after the 3 first weeks during which 3 firefly species were particularly active, other species took over during the 2 at 3 following weeks.

Summer 2022

The firefly dance is back in force this year with 5 evenings filled with beautiful people ! We were able to observe many different species of fireflies, including one which gives off a bluish light., a new discovery by Martin Larochelle who continued his observations this summer.

The evenings ended gently accompanied by the music of Simon Bissonnette-Campeau on the guitar., an active member of the MARE. The fireflies were really dancing !
