Less grass, more biodiversity

The less grass campaign, more biodiversity is a success led by MARE volunteers. Now, it is the subject of a campaign by our branch in the Laurentians !

This is a considerable amount of work that has been done in collaboration with theCity of Coteau-du-Lac in order to make this first step, a success.

  • Creation of an environmental policy.
  • Creation of an environmental action plan.
  • Adoption of a resolution by the municipality.
  • Identification of the areas concerned.
  • Communication with public works.
  • Installation of posters to inform citizens.
  • Management of unwanted plant species.

This work was worth the cost since the cutting surfaces were reduced by 40% in one year !!!

The MARE now wants other municipalities in the region to follow suit in order to promote biodiversity.

Along the Soulanges channel with mowing

As we enter a period of climatic upheaval linked to human-made CO2 emissions and the mass extinction of species,  it is urgent to question our relationship with nature and to ensure that our actions are mainly protection and restoration of our environment.
In such a context, our traditional public spaces Schemes "verts”, mainly the maintenance of grassy areas that are not used for civic activities, no longer have reason to be.

Actions you MARE

The objective of the MARE : convince the municipalities in the region to substitute some current practices of lawn care by approaches renaturalization, to reduce the negative impacts (CO2 emissions, destruction of biodiversity) related to this practice, and get back multiple benefits:

✅ Increased biodiversity : Plant more and can complete the seasonal cycle (seed production, fruits), development of more hospitable habitat for animal species (insects, birds, mammals)

Best ✅ potential thermal regulation (fight against heat islands)

✅ increased CO2 Capture

✅ increased oxygen Emissions

✅ Savings (on maintenance costs / expenses of fossil fuels)
