Protection of forest cover from St. Lazare

issues

The greatest biodiversity in the province is found in southern Quebec. It is also the environment that undergoes the greatest anthropogenic pressures, especially through urban and agricultural development. The Vaudreuil-Soulanges region is no exception.

In Saint-Lazare, the population increased by 32%, from 2001 at 2010 and the occupancy density increased by 46% during this period. The ecological wealth of Saint-Lazare stands out from other municipalities in Vaudreuil-Soulanges, but also throughout the Montérégie. It is therefore essential to officially protect the forest cover, by regulation.

Avril 2021 : good news !!!

The draft regulation 21 was adopted by the municipality of Saint-Lazare. To read the Neomedia article on this subject, click here.

Mars 2021

Within the framework of the draft regulation 1095 suggesting zoning changes to increase protection of deep interior forests, the municipality of Saint-Lazare held a public consultation.

The objectives of this draft regulation are :

1- Ensure the protection of forest ecosystems;
2- Avoid the fragmentation of large forest areas and the penetration of human activities in environments of great ecological interest;
3- Initiate the implementation of the statements of the conservation master plan;
4- Increase protection of deep interior forests by also protecting the surrounding forest edge.

It is in this context that the MARE submitted a document to encourage the City to continue in this direction, but also to make proposals to further improve the protection of forest cover.

27 January 2020

The city of Saint-Lazare presented, the 27 January 2020, at a public meeting, a draft regulation (1079) zoning to ensure the protection of forest cover and promote sustainable management of private forests.

Several people from MARE were there to welcome this initiative, but also to submit a document proposing certain improvements to this project, as well as the press release that was given to the Minister of the Environment, last fall.
