Petition : Protect wetlands

As you read these lines, the Quebec Ministry of the Environment continues to grant permits to destroy wetlands despite the Law on the conservation of wetlands and bodies of water aiming for no net loss. Nothing stops the government from continuing such rampage: nor the importance and rarity of these environments nor even the presence of threatened species. We saw it in the case of Northvolt on the banks of the Richelieu, the case of Stablex in Blainville and in many others across all regions of Quebec. The increasingly intense rains caused by climate change nevertheless show the need to preserve these environments which are so useful in preventing flooding..

By signing this petition, sponsored by the member for Verdun, Alejandra Zaga Mendez, on the National Assembly website (immediately after signing the petition, you will also receive an email asking you to confirm this signature), you help us tell the government that the citizens of Quebec do not accept that these natural environments of great importance for biodiversity and for the fight and adaptation to climate change are thus ravaged!

Act now to protect wetlands

In 2023, the Sustainable Development Commissioner produced a report showing that shortcomings and delays have seriously jeopardized the objective of zero net loss of wetlands fromLaw concerning the conservation of wetlands and bodies of water. According to this report: “the Ministry of the Environment, of the fight against climate change, Wildlife and Parks (MELCCFP) does not use the intended mechanisms effectively” to avoid the loss of these environments.

Alexandre Sirois of La Presse summed up the situation very well in a 2022 editorial: “the system set up five years ago with the aim of curbing the destruction of wetlands is not working”.  He adds that the financial compensation system put in place by the government was to be used to finance projects to restore wetlands but it only collects sums (only 3% money was spent) by making the destruction of wetlands more socially acceptable. The director of SNAP, Alain Branchaud, do not hesitate to talk about greenwashing in an article from La Presse.

At the same time, le gouvernement déposait le projet de loi 81 omnibus modifiant diverses dispositions en matière d’environnement.

At the same time, le gouvernement déposait le projet de loi 81 omnibus modifiant diverses dispositions en matière d’environnement.
