City Council Climate Tour

The tour train is on!
The MARE undertook a tour of the municipal councils of the MRCs of the region, with the aim of getting elected officials to commit to concrete actions, during their tenure, regarding the fight against and resilience to climate change.

Municipalities are invited to draw inspiration fromaction plans proposed by the UMQ herself as well asprojects of the Climate Emergency Declaration. The UMQ maintains that municipalities also have a role to play in this fight, complementing provincial and federal fields of action.

Several municipalities have been visited in recent months. The municipalities selected so far are those for which one or more MARE members, citizens of the municipality, volunteered to question elected officials during a council meeting. A letter is then sent to the municipality a few weeks before the intervention, so that elected officials can prepare a structured and meaningful response to their commitments.

Council evening, the local representative(s) are accompanied by at least one other member of the MARE, a support.
The tour also allows MARE to reach out to municipalities, emphasizing that the group can be part of the solutions and does not only raise problems.

Ask municipalities that have declared a climate emergency to adopt a climate action plan in order to. This is why we have developed the MARE climate guide for municipalities and their citizens, in order to support these municipalities in their efforts.

Tour of municipalities for the climate : Pointe-Claire and Salaberry-de-Valleyfield

As part of our tour of municipalities for the climate, MARE was present on 4 avril 2023 at the Pointe-Claire council meeting.

We hope that this city will be added to the many municipalities in the region that havedeclared a Climate Emergency or who have adopted theUnited for the climate platform of the UMQ.

We hope for a positive response from Pointe-Claire in the coming weeks.

We also took this opportunity to renew our support for the citizen groupSave the Fairview Forest by asking for full protection of this forest.

Then, the 18 avril, members of MARE challenged the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield municipal council regarding the climate crisis.

During the council meeting, we reiterated to elected officials the importance of adopting a structured approach to this challenge. In particular by adopting a plan to combat and adapt to global warming.

Besides, we shared with the elected officials our brand newMARE Climate Guide !!! This tool brings together a range of realistic measures that can be adopted by cities. For us, it is essential that citizens and elected officials collaborate to act quickly to make our communities healthier and more resilient.

We were happy to learn that the climate plan is currently being worked on by the city's Environment department.. MARE welcomes this initiative and looks forward to learning more about the next steps !

By a happy coincidence, our visit took place at the same time as the presentation of a Chair of Generations made by the children of the city. This chair which will be permanently alongside elected officials when they make decisions is a reminder of the importance of their choice on the future of future generations., the citizens of tomorrow.

You can watch our intervention and that concerning the Chair of Generations inclick here andhere.

Climate Guide Tour in Très-Saint-Rédempteur (TSR)

As part of our 2nd tour of municipalities for the climate, after a very successful stop 2 weeks earlier in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, we went to present theMARE climate guide to TSR elected officials, where the idea for this Guide germinated.

We were very well received there. !!! It must be said that this municipality had a lot of good news to give us regarding the environment..

The idea of building a climate plan for the municipality was received very favorably. This climate plan could perhaps be merged with the family policy currently being drafted.

To be continued…

Pointe-Claire declares Climate Emergency !

As part ofour tour of municipalities for the climate, MARE was present on 4 avril 2023 at the Pointe-Claire council meeting.

We wanted this city to be added to the many municipalities in the region that havedeclared a Climate Emergency or who have adopted theUnited for the climate platform of the UMQ.

We also took advantage of this opportunity to renew our support for the citizen groupSave the Fairview Forest by asking for full protection of this forest.

Good news !!!

Pointe Claire, since Tuesday 5 September 2023, is the 27th municipality to declare a Climate Emergency following this MARE tour !!! Indeed, this city adopted the UMQ’s United for the Climate platform.

We will also continue, this autumn, to visit the municipalities that have declared a Climate Emergency in order to offer them our help in developing a climate action plan thanks to theMARE climate guide.
